LOL! @NVEnergy says their monopoly (profits) are best for Nevadans

A proposed ballot measure called the Energy Choice Initiative aims to deregulate electrical service in Nevada, opening up the market to providers other than NV Energy — the sole provider in most parts of the state.

The regulated monopoly model has emerged over the past century as the state sought to make it worth companies’ while to bring expensive electrical infrastructure to Nevada, but critics say the model is outdated as it becomes cheaper to generate energy and as renewable energy sources become more mainstream.

The initiative petition would enshrine in the Nevada Constitution the right for customers to choose their energy provider and to produce their own power to sell to others.

Several major Nevada companies have tried to leave NV Energy’s network in recent years and make or find their own power. They include Wynn Resorts, MGM Resorts and Las Vegas Sands, which consume massive amounts of electricity at their 24/7 casinos and might be able buy cheaper power on wholesale markets.

Electric car maker Tesla and data storage company Switch have publicly supported the measure, saying it fits in line with their company values and would create opportunities in renewable energy.

NV Energy is not fighting the measure. CEO Paul Caudill says the company wants what’s best for Nevada and is willing to “work in a constructive fashion” on the issue of deregulation.

That’s a joke.

If it seemed your Southwest Airlines flight was a little fuller than normal so far this year, you were probably right.

The Dallas-based company, the busiest commercial passenger operator at McCarran International Airport, reported record first-quarter earnings Thursday, including the highest first-quarter load factor of 80.5 percent.

Southwest, which has an average 210 daily flights in and out of Las Vegas to 61 domestic destinations, reported earnings of $511 million, 79 cents per share, on revenue of $4.83 billion, all records, for the quarter that ended March 31.

Emails could put NSHE Chancellor Dan Klaich in prison

If anyone deserves jail time, it is NSHE Chancellor Dan Klaich.

Nevada System of Higher Education officials actively worked to undermine the Legislature’s effort to overhaul college and university funding models in recent years, going so far as to present a false document to lawmakers and joking about it afterward, emails obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal show.

The stakes were about as high as they get in Nevada higher education and a lot of money and power was on the line.

NSHE Chancellor Dan Klaich said Review-Journal is “trying to misconstrue the information by selectively taking quotes out of context and these frank and honest emails, and at times some light-hearted exchanges …”

Yeah, right Dan.

For starters, Bethany Barnes at the RJ did a great job. Read her whole story below.

She may have started a process that will land the feckless Dan Klaich in prison…where he obviously belongs.

3rd Congressional District race a referendum on @GovSandoval

Screenshot 2016-04-17 at 13.42.45

Did Governor Sandoval throw Michael Roberson under the bus?  Danny Tarkanian wants you to think so.

The battle over one of four congressional districts in Nevada is coming at a time when the electorate in the state and the nation appear hungry for a change from establishment politicians and are open to outsiders such as GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump.

The 3rd District, an open race because Republican Rep. Joe Heck is running for U.S. Senate, is competitive. Seven Republicans are running for the nomination in the district, which extends south from the Las Vegas metropolitan area to the state’s borders with California and Arizona.

Michael Roberson’s disadvantage — at least from the viewpoint of his conservative GOP opponents — is his support of the governor’s $1.4 billion tax increase package for public education in the 2015 session. It’s been called the biggest tax increase in state history.

Roberson, an attorney, is a key part of the moderate GOP support structure that Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval relied on to get his tax package through in 2015 and bypass the objections of more conservative lawmakers. He was first elected to the state Senate in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.

Danny Tarkanian’s campaign has set up a website labeling Roberson a “tax traitor.”

Tax traitor vs. conservative whack-job. Some choice.
