Thanks to #Trump, business is booming for #abortion fanatics

Abortions are big business in America.

For abortion fanatics, there is “a silver lining” to the election of Donald Trump — even to one of Hillary Clinton’s close friends and major donors.

“We paid a terrible price. But here we are. We’re together. We’re organized. There is a silver lining,” Susie Tompkins Buell said Thursday before the start of an annual fundraiser for NARAL Pro-Choice America in San Francisco. Buell is a San Francisco philanthropist and co-founder of the Esprit clothing company.

Last year, NARAL’s 21st annual “Power of Choice Luncheon” drew 600 people. In another sign of how Trump’s election has energized progressives, 900 people — mostly women, including Jennifer Siebel Newsom, wife of Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom — packed a Fairmont Hotel ballroom Thursday for the 22nd edition, raising $1 million for the organization.

Business has been booming for NARAL, formerly known as the National Abortion Rights Action League, since the election. The organization, along with Planned Parenthood, is on the front lines of women’s health (i.e. abortion) issues.

NARAL has attracted more than 400,000 new members since election day, pushing its rolls to well over 1 million. And while the organization declined to release specific numbers, a spokesman said it has seen a 300 percent increase in money raised per week after the election compared with before Trump’s win.
